Steve Jobs Hates Bad Teachers…and Broccoli

Choppin' broccoleee, choppin' broccoliiiThis past Friday, Steve Jobs lashed out at teachers unions during a conference on education reform. Jobs compared schools to businesses with principals serving as CEOs. “What kind of person could you get to run a small business if you told them that when they came in they couldn’t get rid of people that they thought weren’t any good?” Jobs asked. “Not really great ones because if you’re really smart you go, ‘I can’t win.”‘ Jobs claimed that no amount of technology in the classroom would improve public schools until principals could fire bad teachers.

“I believe that what is wrong with our schools in this nation is that they have become unionized in the worst possible way,” Jobs added. “This unionization and lifetime employment of K-12 teachers is off-the-charts crazy.”

Jobs then surprised the audience by claiming “I also hate broccoli. I have never liked it, and I never will. Especially steamed. I hate steamed broccoli.”

I couldn’t agree more about the teachers. I couldn’t agree less about the broccoli. Let’s be honest, being part of the cabbage family doesn’t exactly get you VIP with the popular kids, but let’s look at the nutritional value:
1)indole-3-carbinol, a compound that helps deactivate estrogen that promotes tumor growth.
2)sulforaphane boosts the body’s detoxification enzymes helping to clear potentially carcinogenic substances more quickly.
3)Brassica family vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts help prevent cancer.

Now we could argue all day about the public school teachers until we’re blue in the face.I feel lucky to make it out of the system as well as I did. When it comes to education and more importantly educating our youth, we must not name the blame but take it into our own hands and spend time teaching our children to eat lot’s of vegetables. Steamed or raw, it’s your choice.
